Chiefs and Scholars Maimon Schwarzschild

I‘ve been reading Philip Bobbitt’s very interesting Shield of Achilles: a complicated, thoughtful book about the (possible) decline of the nation state.  (I’d feel better if I could be sure the President of Iran were reading it too, but that’s something else again…)  Here is a good review of Bobbitt’s book by Dennis Patterson: good in both senses — positive; and also a smart, well-written, good review.

Philip Bobbitt teaches law at the University of Texas.  He is also a nephew of Lyndon Baines Johnson: his mother was Johnson’s bookish older sister Rebekah.

Which raises the question of whether there are other close relatives of historical figures who have become serious scholars. 

There is David Eisenhower, Ike’s grandson – and Richard Nixon’s son-in-law – a political scientist and historian who has written a worthwhile book about his grandfather.  Ike’s brother Milton was a real academic too.

And there is Sergei Khrushchev, Nikita Khrushchev’s son, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute at Brown University, editor of his father’s papers, and a puckish and perceptive historian of the Soviet Union.
