Brad Delong sums up Milton Friedman’s viewed beautifully:

Friedman was a pragmatic libertarian. He believedthat — as an empirical matter — giving individuals freedom andletting them coordinate their actions by buying and selling on marketswould produce the best results…that the market system would createnew opportunities for trade that would route around marketfailures…that government failure was pervasive, and that anyexpansion of government beyond the classical liberal state would behighly likely to cause more trouble than it could solve.

This is pretty much what I believe, although I differed from Friedman on some of the details.
