Gay army times Tom Smith

This op-ed is mildly interesting.  Regarding the latest gays in the military semi-bruhaha.

I think we also need to ask whether don’t ask don’t tell should be abolished before or after we rapidly deescalate with great expedition from Iraq.  That is, bug out, cut and run, however you wish to put it.  Coordinating these two policies may present challenges.  I also think we deserve an update on whether the Democrats still want to bring back the draft, or maybe that was just some of them.  Though maybe if we surrender (sorry) quickly enough, we won’t need a draft?  I am a little bit afraid that if we allow gays in the military we will just make the so-called terrorists hate us even more, and cause many more thousands of them to want to kill us, when we should be looking for ways that we could understand each other better, such as dialog.  I must confess here to some ignorance as to whether the radical Muslims abominate homosexuality or are very tolerant of it.  I have always assumed it was female virgins to which the would be martyrs aspired, for example, but I don’t really know.  Perhaps not.  I know they seem remarkably old-fashioned, even medieval, in their attitudes towards women.  But whatever.  We have no right to impose our culture on them, or even on ourselves.  A value is just a war waiting to happen.

UPDATE  It may be that this post is too convolutedly ironical to be easily understood, even by me.  This may be because my own attitude toward the gay thing is probably incoherent.  I can really only say what I would probably do, were I in charge, alarming as that thought may be to all of us.  I would not allow OTC gays in the military, only because I think it would be militarily difficult.  Maybe we should wait until after we know whether the Republic is going to survive or not, which should be soon in any event.  Generally, I follow a policy of don’t ask, don’t tell on social issues, but what the heck.  Do I think homosexuality is a sin?  Well, if it is a sin, it is certainly not one I worry about.  I have my own sins to keep me busy.  I suppose I can fairly say it is one sinful activity that does not appeal to me in the least, unlike most of them.   I don’t think smoking  pot is a sin, but I am satisfied to leave it as illegal.  I don’t have any close friends who are gay, but I have relatives whom I love who are gay, and of course I would hate to see anything hurt them.  But enough about me already.  On matters gay, I would probably end up sounding like Burke, though far less eloquent, of course.  One wonders whether Burke was gay.
