Britain’s Prince Harry Won’t Go to Iraq: Too Dangerous Gail Heriot
Gosh! They don’t make royals like they used to. When Queen Elizabeth, the current queen’s mother, was asked during World War II whether she would be getting her daughters–then-Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret–out of London during the harrowing Blitz, she replied: “The girls will not leave unless I do. I will not leave unless the King does. And the King will not leave under any circumstances whatsoever.” Wonderfully put.
Maybe I’m being too hard on young Harry. They say that there have been specific personal threats against him in Iraq. But if old George VI wouldn’t leave London under “any circumstances whatsoever,” you’d think Harry wouldn’t allow “circumstances” to prevent him from doing his duty. I thought that was the whole point of royals: They’re supposed to lead the charge.
