More on the Immigration BillMike Rappaport

Michael Barone defends the immigration bill, but he seems naive on the main point for me:

Some opponents of this bill fasten on the provision that commits tobuilding only 370 miles of the 700-mile border fence that Congressapproved last year. But almost no one calls for a fence along all ofthe 2,000-plus mile border. I should think that the length of the fenceto be built is negotiable.

Glenn Reynolds argues that those who want to punish the Republicans should favor its adoption.  True, but  the better thing to do is to attempt to reform the Republicans and that can be attempted by stopping the bill.

The bill allows the government only one day to conduct aso-called “background check” on the applicant. If the (alreadyoverstretched) feds can’t find anything in that single day, the aliengets a probationary visa that lets him roam at will and seek employmentlegally.
