Would a gun have made a difference? Tom Smith

While I was on vacation, the ghastly murders of the two women and one girl of the Petit family in Connecticut took place.  Yet another good case for the death penalty, and I’m sure the prosecutor will seek it.  Too bad it will take years to be carried out.

One inevitably wonders about the safety of one’s own family.  My wife’s brother was killed in a home invasion robbery.  Two USD students were raped a few months ago in a home invasion robbery.  Statistically, I assume this sort of crime is quite rare, but one still wonders.

Would a gun have made a difference to the Petits?  Probably not, but it would not have hurt.  The murderers did not need a gun to kill anybody.  Indeed, their victims arguably would have been better off shot than left to die in the fire.  The villains entered through an open door apparently.  I know it’s irrational, but I will be checking my doors and making sure the alarm is set at night after reading this story.  And maybe I’ll just check on my little friend.
