Timothée Chalamet and the calcified state of menswear on the red carpet | Financial Times
When Timothée Chalamet arrived at a Venice Film Festival premiere wearing a shiny, red, backless halter top, with matching trousers and black heeled boots, there was a certain amount of oohing and aahing in the media, social and otherwise. Rightly so. An overtly feminine style on a global sex symbol; a man s naked back. It is worth noting, though, that Chalamet s style was not at all original. There is another straight mainstream star who, decades ago, rocked looks precisely like this and rocked them organically rather than self-consciously.
That star, of course, was Prince. Not only is it easy to imagine the late musician wearing precisely Chalamet s Venice outfit, but it is easy to imagine him wearing it while walking down the street, rather than the red carpet.
