Opinion: Closing schools due to tropical storm was wrong – The San Diego Union-Tribune
The decision to postpone the first day of school by the San Diego Unified School District is another clear demonstration that educating students is not the top priority of leadership. While it s reasonable to think that some schools had repairs and cleanup, it s hard to justify 90,000-plus students missing school and impacting all the families who had to respond to the sudden change in schedule. In Richmond, Virginia, they are testing adding 20 days of instruction to the school year to help students catch up on learning loss from COVID-19 school closures. I think we should be exploring ways to help our students, but voluntarily canceling classes doesn t indicate that SDUSD shares that view.
