San Diego softens statement but doubles down on homeschool policy
Cardinal Robert McElroy has doubled down on a controversial homeschooling policy in the San Diego diocese, while walking back an initial statement that accompanied the release of that policy.
McElroy recognized parents as the primary educators of children, while reiterating that homeschool programs in the diocese will not be allowed to use parish facilities or create their own sacrament prep programs, separate from that of their parish.
Not giving home school parent more notice has been a major burden on home schoolers. They have been left scrambling at the last minute to figure out where to conduct their activities.
I’m not sure why the home schoolers can’t use parish facilities, given all the AA groups, Scouting, etc. groups that use them. Nobody confuses AA with the RC church, or Scouting. Sacrament prep courses are a different matter. But frankly, those prep classes need a lot of work.
