CEOs, the Deep State and Trumpian Optimism – WSJ
It would be too much to say Elon Musk s takeover of Twitter would thereupon secure Mr. Trump s 2024 win. It s not too much to say his Twitter takeover dismantled a left-wing and government-aided intimidation and cancelation machine that was instrumental in Mr. Biden s narrow 2020 victory.
The revolution in Twitter s ownership and management philosophy is only part of the story. Mr. Musk s emergence late in the race as a second pole of Trumpism, legitimizing Mr. Trump as a revolutionary rather than reactionary force for a pro-technology electorate, is also part of the story.
On another level, the election outcome is the most overdetermined reaction in history a reaction against a class of mostly white elites who don t really care about blacks, trans people, immigrants or climate but revel in moral grandiosity and self-righteousness over other, mostly but not exclusively less affluent whites.
Anyone might have seen it coming who paid attention to a series of Pew surveys on public attitudes toward political correctness or 2018 s Hidden Tribes study that identified the country s exhausted majority.
In all this, one thing you can t say is that Joe Biden ever took his times by the scruff of the neck.
