Matt Goodwin: UK is a big pile of wood covered in gasoline
The mysterious circumstances surrounding the father s arrest may make the case more complicated than the media has reported. It appears that the school felt threatened in some way by him and the WhatsApp messages. The school had told the parents to stay off school property and they had not even been able to go and watch their daughter perform in a school play at Christmas, said Goodwin, who has the largest Substack in Britain and is a senior visiting professor at the University of Buckingham.
But there is no evidence that the father, who works for The Times of London, threatened anyone with violence. And the police dismissed the case last week.
The arrest comes after multiple arrests of people for things they ve said or posted on social media since Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office. Over the last eight or nine months, we ve seen a steady succession of cases and incidents that have all added up to this free speech crisis that we ve got.
Despite pioneering free speech, the UK has no law as strong as the First Amendment. And the Left in the UK have, like the Left in the US, come to treat speech as a form of violence. The UK government tracks what are called Non-crime Hate Incidents that allow citizens to snitch on each other to the government.
