The Trump-Columbia University deal – by Paul Mirengoff

Of all the institutions through which the American left has marched, the most complete conquest has probably occurred in academia. Accordingly, I ve always thought that academia would be the most difficult institution in which to roll back the rot. And because concerns over academic freedom are valid (albeit hypocritical when cited by many on the left), the kind of efforts needed to roll back the rot are, in some cases, problematic.

Donald Trump is the first president willing to take on academia. To be fair, George W. Bush is the only other Republican to have been president during the period when colleges and universities veered blatantly to the left.

Trump is currently battling Harvard, among other universities. With Harvard, the battle is now in court. Harvard will almost certainly prevail before its liberal hometown district court judge, Allison Burroughs. After that, the outcome is uncertain.

Yesterday, however, another left-wing Ivy League mainstay Columbia University reached a settlement with the Trump administration. The agreement will restore most of the federal funding cut off by the administration. In exchange, Columbia will make a series of changes that, the administration hopes, will improve life for Jews on campus, curtail racially discriminatory practices, and make Columbia less of a bastion of leftism.

It’s a start. I hope it eventually trickles down to my own former small and formerly undeniably cute university.
