China s New Military Footprint in Cuba – WSJ

The Chinese Communist Party peddles the false narrative that setting up an espionage post in Cuba is no different from U.S. support for Taiwan. The asterisk the size of an aircraft carrier is that the U.S. isn t menacing Cuba with the threat of an invasion. America has long retained the right to help Taiwan defend itself, and U.S. troops training the island s forces pose no threat to the Chinese mainland. Alas, such fake moral equivalence now has cachet on the American right and left.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that the U.S. would have deep concerns about Chinese military activity on Cuba, and that he made this message clear on his weekend visit to Beijing. The Biden Administration has declared Mr. Blinken s trip a success on the standard that U.S.-China relations are at least no worse. Yet the public pledges amount to a promise to keep talking, though only sometimes. Beijing rebuffed an American effort to maintain basic communication between militaries, a standard practice to avoid misunderstanding.
