WASHINGTON The Supreme Court Monday weighed whether creative services should be exempt from laws that protect same-sex couples, with conservative justices expressing sympathy toward a website designer s claim of a constitutional right to reject commissions that celebrate same-sex marriages.
The court took the case to resolve a long-brewing conflict between two strands of its recent jurisprudence, one extending legal equality to LGBT individuals, the other elevating rights of conscience and expression above secular government interests.
