Abbott signs $1.8B border security bill amid illegal migrant crisis HotAir

Governor Abbott signed a $1.8B border security bill in Fort Worth on Friday. The bill triples the Texas border security budget and it includes $750M for the construction of a border wall. The bill also includes funding to increase immigration jail capacity.

I hope astute historians of federalism are paying attention to this fascinating struggle over the southern border. It gets clearer if we back the camera up. Here we have the Democrats in DC essentially flinging the doors wide open and trying to obstruct anyone who tries to close the door. And we have the Republicans in Texas trying to close the door as fast as they can, even to the point of *building their own wall*. Extraordinary. I’ll take a pass on judging the morality of the players, but if you’re pro-nation state, you’ve got to be pro-border and it seems we don’t really have a southern border at this point, quite by design. And it’s working for our friends the Democrats. All the Republicans can do is squeal. Perhaps the Republicans can reverse the damage starting in 2022 but I very much doubt it.
