Why did the Obama administration stick with the false story until it fell apart?

This whole story is very odd. You have a WH spinning a very consequential story to the press so hard it amounts to outright disinformation. The media goes along with the pretty transparent falsehood for a quite a while, at least until the foreign press and a few US outlets defect from the cover story. Then the WH reverses course and says, of course the truth is the opposite of what we have been saying. Press mostly just takes this as business as usual. Creepily Orwellian. How must this look to Putin, PRC high officials, various other potential enemies? Like floundering, I would think, or maybe just baffling. To me, it seems bizarre. When a tame press plays along with official disinformation, it’s like it produces a strange reality distortion field. My brain is used to something like a skeptical press with some ultimate wish of getting the story right, even if their inclinations are liberal, and a WH that on some level thinks it must tell the truth, even if not all of it, mostly for fear of getting caught lying. But we have left that world far behind. It used to be, as it were, the truth was some kind of median among the party in power, the press and the opposition. Now it’s some moving point in space around which they all orbit chaotically. –TS
