Are Covid Vaccines Riskier Than Advertised? – WSJ

One remarkable aspect of the Covid-19 pandemic has been how often unpopular scientific ideas, from the lab-leak theory to the efficacy of masks, were initially dismissed, even ridiculed, only to resurface later in mainstream thinking. Differences of opinion have sometimes been rooted in disagreement over the underlying science. But the more common motivation has been political.

Another reversal in thinking may be imminent. Some scientists have raised concerns that the safety risks of Covid-19 vaccines have been underestimated. But the politics of vaccination has relegated their concerns to the outskirts of scientific thinking for now.

Tell me about it.

I think this is a symptom of the decentralization of authority. As there are increasingly many authorities or pseudo-authorities, various sorts put themselves forward and compete for attention. Some of them, like the Blessed Dr. Fauci, pose with more authority than they really deserve, and do so evidently in part to cover for their interests and past mistakes. But over time and often much later than one would hope, the truth, or at least sometimes truer than we had in the past, will out, unless of course it doesn’t. Some things just get buried and stay buried. Then those of us who know better have to listen to self-important blow-hards say “As we all know, blah blah blah.” But that’s better than having the government cram down obvious falsehoods day after day, like they have in the PRC, for example. We only get that sometimes and our officials are fortunately too incompetent to get their stories straight. Just look at the CCP. It is nothing less than astonishing how well organized and intelligent (and of course deeply wicked) they are.
